Visually challenged guides show the way at car rally

The fifth Blind Man's Car Rally - an endeavour to raise funds for its projects under the aegis of the national theme ' Freedom through Education' - on Sunday drew over a 100 enthusiastic participants from all walks of life. The rally, which offered blind community a unique platform to showcase their extraordinary skills, helped raise funds for projects that would benefit the overall development of the visually- challenged community.

Addressing the media at the fifth Blind Man's Car Rally, K Ramkrishna Hon. Secretary General, National Association for the Blind (NAB, India) said, " The aim of the rally is to create awareness that we all are responsible for our society, it matters least whether we are visually impaired or not. We can bring change in the country, good or bad only if we have a concern and correct attitude. This rally is a small effort to join hands and fight against odds.

This rally aims to achieve economic freedom through education in India." With the aim of creating awareness about the grave consequences of ignoring literacy, the initiative focussed on highlighting challenges faced by the visually- impaired while on road. The unique car race with blind navigators is a Time- Speed- Distance ( TDS) rally, where the visually- impaired navigators direct their normal partner drivers through a 65- km circuit in the city. Starting from the NAB building at Worli Sea Face, these navigators were to guide the contestants on a route with a series of check- points, both specified on the Braille maps provided to them. It was an interesting interaction between the visually impaired navigators and the participant drivers.

Ad- filmmaker, Prahlad Kakkar, who flagged off the rally, said, " I am delighted to be associated with such a noble initiative of Round Table India, which is contributing to the movement of educating millions of underprivileged children. We feel proud today to be an integral part in promoting education and bringing about a change." Also present at the event
