Western Railway to convert 47 more services to 12 car

On New Year's Eve, Western Railway (WR) will be presenting its commuters a gift by way of converting forty- seven 9- car services to 12- car ones, thereby increasing the train space per individual considerably.

This will increase the carrying capacity of these trains by 33 per cent and also the commuter comfort. Out of these 47 services converted from 9 to 12- car, 27 services are between Borivali and Churchgate, 15 services between Andheri and Churchgate and Two services each between Churchgate and Bandra and Churchgate and Malad whereas one is between Bandra and Borivali.

The 47 trains that make almost 12 per cent of the existing 9- car services are being augmented to 12- car. The total number of 12- car services is now 845 i. e. 70 percent of the total 1210 services.

"It will benefit over 60000 commuters daily. The emphasis in recent years has been to improve capacity without affecting punctuality. The punctuality is improved in recent period especially after partial closure of gates. Increasing 12-car is an important step towards increasing carry capacity without congesting the section i.e. increasing the trains. There has been 65 percent increase in 12- car services in last three years where as the increase in suburban passengers has been 7 per cent during the same period," chief PRO of WR, Sharat Chandrayan said.
