Yet another shocking incident has exposed how inadequately the authorities are geared for emergencies. While victims caught in unfortunate circumstances are at the receiving end, the authorities only try to shirk from their responsibilities. On Tuesday, when the four- year- old Sadhana Jamdade was thrown out of a running train near Vidyavihar, it were the Government Railway Police officials who had to shell out money from their own pockets for carrying out an emergency CT scan and medication. On the other hand, while none of the railway authorities visited the girl, they confidentially stated that the incident could not be classified as an " accident" and that their responsibility was limited up to providing her with first aid.
Sadhana was hurled out of the running Bhusaval Passenger near Vidyavihar, following which she was provided first- aid and later taken to Rajawadi Hospital. In fact, it was incessant pleas by the Jagdade family members that they would be unable to pay for the numerous medical tests that Sadhana required that the GRP officials contributed towards the emergency.
One of the GRP officials said on the condition of anonymity, " We decided to pay for the CT scan and other treatment as Sadhana was bleeding profusely. Even though the railway authorities were informed about the same soon after the incident, none of them even bothered to visit the victim. They may not even bear the medical expenses of the girl." While talking to the FPJ , Central Railway CPRO V A Malegaonkar said, " Our responsibility was to provide first aid and make arrangement for taking her to the hospital. None of the railway authorities have visited the victim.
Also, as it is not an accident, there is no provision in the rulebook to pay any compensation to the victim's family." While making these claims, the CPRO even made rude comments that were later refuted by the GRP officials. Late in evening, Malegaonkar added, " Till now, we have received no information stating that the girl was hurled out of the running train. The GRP is investigating the incident and they would take appropriate action against the accused." However, the GRP officials stated that it was an irresponsible statement and asserted that in such cases, at every stage of the probe, the railways are kept in loop about the development.
